Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes is firmly in the running to replace Pedro Caixinha as the manager of Rangers, according to Sky Sports.

The broadcaster reported on Friday morning, as cited by the Sky Sports Scotland Twitter account, that the 46-year-old will be considered by the Ibrox hierarchy for the newly vacant post.

Sky report that Rangers will consider a “wide range of candidates” to succeed Caixinha and one of those will be Dons manager McInnes.

Caixinha was sacked on Thursday after an abject 228-day reign at Rangers, the shortest tenure in the club’s history.

Down to fourth place in the Premiership after contriving to surrender a stoppage-time lead to Kilmarnock on Wednesday, the Ibrox board called time on Caixinha amid growing unrest from supporters.

Hired in March from Qatari side Al-Gharafa, his tenure at the club was littered with disappointment. Three defeats to Celtic, a first Ibrox loss to Aberdeen in 26 years and humiliation at the hands of Luxembourg minnows Progres Niederkorn came prior to a meek exit to Motherwell in Sunday’s Betfred Cup semi-final.

OPINION

McInnes is clearly a strong candidate to replace Caixinha, although there are question marks as to whether he is the right candidate. The Scot knows the SPL inside out, has steered Aberdeen to three consecutive league runners-up spots and is well aware of the expectations at Rangers after five years at the club during his playing days. His trophy count as a manager is just the Scottish League Cup he won at Aberdeen in 2013-14, which will put off many Light Blues fans, who also claim he lacks the ambition to be in the Ibrox hotseat. His midweek comments that Celtic are unbeatable have also not gone down well among the Rangers faithful.
