Rangers could sign Crystal Palace central midfielder James McArthur in January, according to Football Whispers.

The football site claim that the Scotland international, 30, is the second most likely player to be the next signing of the Glasgow giants as they eye reinforcements in January.

McArthur has been a regular for most of the last three years at Palace since joining for £7.9million from Wigan in 2014.

He has been on the substitute’s bench for the last two games but the 32-times international has still made seven appearances in all competitions for Palace this season, five of which have come in the Premier League,

Football Whispers, which gathers all transfer rumours across the globe and calculates the likelihood of them happening, rates it 3.2 out of 5 that Hearts wide forward Jamie Walker, 24, will join Rangers, with five the highest possible ranking and meaning it is a certainty.

The attacker is ahead in the ratings of McArthur, who is rated at 2.8 to transfer to Ibrox, and Hibernian playmaker John McGinn, who is rated at 2.0.

Good move for Rangers?

Yes. Glasgow-born McArthur has extensive international and Premier League experience, both at Palace and former club Wigan. He has been in and out of the starting XI for Roy Hodgson’s side this season but that is the case for many of the players at the bottom club. The Scot has made 111 appearances for Palace, scoring 11 goals from his central midfield spot, and would be an upgrade on the current central midfield options available to Pedro Caixinha. He also knows the SPL from his days at Hamilton Academical.

Likely to happen?

It’s certainly possible, as McArthur is out of contract at Palace next summer and is likely to be looking for a new club from January onwards. Matching the Scot’s wage demands is likely to prove Rangers’ biggest challenge, as the actual transfer fee could be well within reach.
