Alan Shearer has called for Harry Kane to be given the England captain’s armband permanently ahead of the World Cup qualifier with Slovenia.

It was announced that Harry Kane had been made captain for the third time ahead of the World Cup qualifier with Slovenia on Thursday.

The news was announced by the England FA on Wednesday afternoon and Kane himself tweeted afterwards to say how “proud” he would be to lead the team out.

A victory in the game would be enough to clinch qualification for England, regardless of other results.

However, Kane has not been given the job permanently, and it’s led to a tweet of support from Alan Shearer.

Shearer tweeted a message out on Wednesday evening, saying “Give it to @HKane permanently.”

OPINION

Opinion seems split on whether Harry Kane should be England’s permanent captain. No one denies that he’s a player on fire at the moment, but some fans have questioned his leadership qualities, while others are saying a striker should never be captain. Kane is probably England’s best chance of doing anything significant in Russia next summer though, and if this helps him and inspires him to top form then it should be a done deal. Hopefully we’ll get a clearer picture after the game against Slovenia.
