Leeds United are interested in signing Aapo Halme from Finnish top-flight club HJK Helsinki, according to Helsingin Sanoma.

The Finnish newspaper claim that the Whites are keen on landing the 19-year-old defender.

The teenage sensation has recently helped HJK win the Veikkausliiga title to become a top-flight winner for the first time in his career.

It is understood that HJK were considering allowing Halme to leave in the summer, but a spate of injuries in defence ensured they kept him at the club during the window.

Halme is recognised for being a powerful no-nonsense centre-back and his 6’4” frame makes him an imposing figure.

Good move for Leeds?

Leeds already have several talented centre-back options in their squad and it’s unlikely that Halme would get a look in anytime soon

Thomas Christiansen has preferred the combination of Pontus Jansson and Liam Cooper in the heart of his defence so far this campaign.

Meanwhile, Everton loanee Matthew Pennington has impressed when given the opportunity and academy graduate Conor Shaughnessy is quickly

Leeds may need to look long-term though as Pennington’s deal is only a loan one and Christiansen has shown he is willing to pick up unknown players from foreign leagues.

It is unclear whether Halme would yet be ready for English football, but clearly has potential after playing 36 games for Finnish giants HJK and looks to have the physical build.

Likely to happen?

HJK did ship on a few players during the summer window and notably star striker Alfredo Morelos made a switch to Scottish giants Rangers.

An exit for Halme was on the cards in the transfer window, but injuries prevented any deal coming to fruition.

Leeds look like they could have a real chance of landing the teenager in the future, but for now they are only interested in the defender and it’s unclear whether they will step up their pursuit.
