Thomas Christiansen has delivered a warning to Sheffield Wednesday ahead of the Yorkshire derby on Sunday, backing his team to produce a reaction to the 3-1 defeat to Cardiff in midweek.

Leeds lost the game, their position at the top of the table and Liam Cooper to two yellow cards in the brusing clash at the Cardiff City Stadium, but Christiansen was unequivocal in his response.

“I believe that the team responded in the proper way from our defeat in Millwall,” he said in the Yorkshire Evening Post.

“We’re going to do the same against Sheffield Wednesday.”

OPINION

Leeds responded to losing their first league defeat of the season against Millwall by beating a decent Ipswich side 3-2 at home. Christiansen will be desperate for them to do the same against Sheffield Wednesday – it’s games like this that his side need to win if they’re going to mount a serious challenge for automatic promotion. More worryingly, if they lose, it will be three defeats in four as the team enter the international break. A win would give them a huge morale boost and set them back in the right direction. Christiansen is hoping the latest setback is a blip and fans will be desperate to see a reaction. Christiansen’s Leeds side have shown they’ve got skill, now they need to prove they’ve got the strength to cope with the physical nature of the Championship. Christiansen says his team is “ready for anything” – the Sheffield Wednesday game will be a good test of their credentials.
