Virgil van Dijk has said that Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge is the hardest striker to play against, although he added the caveat “when he is fit” in an interview with Rio Ferdinand.

The short clip from the interview was posted on Twitter.

This continues the charm offensive from the in-demand defender.

Talking to Squawka at the launch of FIFA 18, the centre-back was asked which English teams would go furthest in this season’s Champions League.

Van Dijk replied, “I think Liverpool and Man City maybe.”

Liverpool made van Dijk their primary summer target but had to back away from the deal and issue a public apology after Southampton threatened them with tapping up their player.

OPINION

Van Dijk is reminding Liverpool that he’s still here and laying the groundwork for a great relationship with the fans. It’s more than obvious that Liverpool need a new centre-back and Klopp will surely be hoping that the move for the centre-back is not dead in the water. However, it’s highly unlikely that Southampton’s stance will have softened since the summer and Klopp will need a solid Plan B – something he didn’t have in the summer window.
