Sky Sports pundit Charlie Nicholas has made the stunning claim that Pedro Caixinha could be axed by Rangers as early as tonight (Friday).

The former Scotland international insisted that the Portugese could get his marching orders if Rangers continue their mixed start to the season by failing to win at Hamilton this evening.

The Glasgow giants are fifth in the Scottish Premiership table, eight points adrift of leaders Celtic, and Nicholas feels that Caixinha has made no headway in the club’s bid to narrow the gap on their bitter rivals.

“Caixinha’s time as Rangers manager is coming to an end,” former Celtic striker Nicholas wrote in his Express column. “There is absolutely no question about that.

“It could be after the game at Hamilton tonight or in two months, but there is no doubt we are counting down the days.

“I just can’t see how he will turn things around to survive long-term.

“His results have been poor and it sounds as if things aren’t exactly great behind the scenes in his dressing room either.

“Nothing has changed. When the pressure is on Rangers come up short. Pedro has done next to nothing to change things.”

OPINION

Caixinha has been under the microscope since the day he walked into Ibrox with a CV that raised eyebrows and hardly had Celtic running for cover. The pressure has been increased a few notches further in the wake of last weekend’s Old Firm defeat and reports of dressing room unrest. The Portugese knows he needs to string together a few wins to get the supporters on board and give himself some breathing space. If the results continue to be fitful, Nicholas will surely be proved right and the axe will come.
