Everton striker Wayne Rooney has been handed extra punishment from his club as well as being issued community service and a two-year driving ban, according to the Sun.

The report has revealed that the former England international has been issued a two-weeks wage fine by the Toffees in addition to his 12-month community service and driving ban.

The newspaper claims that the 31-year-old has been instructed to pay a fine of £320,000 because of his conviction.

The striker appeared in court on Monday following a drink driving incident where the striker had a breathalyser reading of 104 micrograms despite the legal limit being 35 micrograms per 100ml of breath.

This means that Rooney will not be seen driving to the Finch Farm training complex any time soon, but the attacker has apologised in a personal statement.

“I want publicly to apologise for my unforgiveable lack of judgement in driving while over the legal limit. It was completely wrong,” Rooney said on his official website.

“I have already said sorry to my family, my manager and chairman and everyone at Everton FC. Now I want to apologise to all the fans and everyone else who has followed and supported me throughout my career.

“Of course I accept the sentence of the court and hope that I can make some amends through my community service.”

OPINION

Everton have made the right decision to hand Rooney their own fine as it shows that the club will not tolerate that behaviour from their players. The news about Rooney’s conviction is damaging for the club’s spirits, following a number of disappointing and embarrassing defeats. His court hearing came just 24 hours after their defeat to his former side Manchester United, which just adds another demotivating factor to the Toffees’ already difficult season. Rooney must put this behind him and focus on performing for his team in the coming fixtures.
