Nicholas suggests Sigurdsson for Tottenham

|

Charlie Nicholas believes that Tottenham could consider re-signing Gylfi Sigurdsson this summer as an alternative option to Ross Barkley.

Spurs have been long-term admirers of Everton midfielder Barkley, but are yet to make any progress for his signature due to his £50million price tag.

The Daily Star claim that some of Spurs’ Premier League rivals are now eyeing moves for Barkley and it’s unclear on where he will end in the new season

Sky Sports pundit Nicholas has suggested that Swansea playmaker Sigurdsson may be a different option for Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

“Everton seem to be pricing Spurs out of Ross Barkley,” Thompson told Sky Sports. “I don’t think £50m is going to happen. His wage demands are going to have to come down and he might have to accept that.

“Spurs might have to look elsewhere, maybe even at bringing back Gylfi Sigurdsson.”

Sigurdsson previously spent two years at White Hart Lane earlier on his career, before leaving for Swansea in 2014.

The Iceland international is recognised as an attacking midfielder and has become a highly influential figure at the Liberty Stadium.

He has made 131 appearances in total for the Swans, scoring 37 goals and supplying 30 assists in return.

Swansea manager Paul Clement has confirmed that Sigurdsson may not be at the club next season as he is being chased by Everton.

OPINION

If Spurs are to splash out £40million-plus on a player then Barkley is probably the best option for them, with the huge potential of the 23-year-old a big factor. However, if they want a ready-made product then Sigurdsson is a great alternative and is entering the peak of his career. He may not have nailed down a starting XI position during his first well with Spurs, but he has vastly improved since and is now a real goal threat. The north London club are still without a signing this summer and will most likely have to break that trend if they are to realistically compete for the title in the upcoming season.
