Tottenham are in line to finalise the £36million signing of defender Davinson Sanchez from Ajax on Tuesday, according to Sky Sports Italy correspondent Gianluca Di Marzio.

The transfer expert has claimed on his personal website that the London giants could seal a deal for the Colombia international within the next 24 hours.

Di Marzio reports that Tottenham officials are in “constant contact” with their counterparts at Ajax and are on the verge of striking an agreement for the fee at £36million.

Good move for Tottenham?

Yes. Spurs have a mixed track record of signing players from the Dutch Eredivisie. Vincent Janssen came with a big reputation and for a near-£20million transfer fee last summer but flopped badly and does not look cut out for the Premier League. But others will point out what a success Jan Vertonghen has been since swapping Ajax for north London, while Toby Alderweireld, who arrived via Atletico Madrid and Southampton, is widely regarded by Spurs fans as not only their best defender since Ledley King, but also possibly their best of the last 40 years. Sanchez had an outstanding 2016-17 campaign at Ajax, is already a Colombia international and has the commanding presence to be a roaring success. He could be the defensive heir apparent to Alderweireld and Spurs’ rock at the back for the next five years.

Likely to happen?

Given the escalating noise surrounding this transfer, it would rank as a major shock if it did not go through. Talks are reportedly at an advanced stage, and Sanchez is preparing to climb aboard a plane to fly to London and put pen to paper after being left out of the Ajax side for their clash at the weekend.
