Tottenham have won the race to sign Barcelona midfielder Andre Gomes following an intervention from manager Mauricio Pochettino, according to the Mail.

The newspaper delivered an update on their live transfer blog (Thursday, 4.49pm) that Gomes, 24, “is now on his way to Tottenham” after they reached an agreement over a deal.

The Mail report that Spurs have secured their second transfer hijack of what is turning into a remarkable day of deadline deals for the club.

The Londoners have reportedly agreed to sign Fernando Llorente from Swansea after ambushing Chelsea and now they appear to have done the same to West Ham over the signing of Gomes.

Good move for Tottenham?

Undoubtedly. The signing of Gomes would be a demonstration of not only Spurs’ growing transfer market muscle but also their vast improvement as a team in recent seasons. The Portugal international struggled at Barcelona last season following his £31million transfer from Benfica but he is a dynamic central midfielder who already has 25 caps for the European champions and has his best years ahead of him. A season-long loan is a smart deal for all parties.

Likely to happen?

At this point it would be a huge surprise if Gomes is not a Tottenham player by the end of the day. This deal has gathered pace during the day and an agreement now appears to be in place after yet another Spurs hijack.
