Les Ferdinand has claimed that Tottenham have not needed to sign a new striker this summer due to the form of Heung-Min Son last season.

Many Spurs fans believe that they need more competition in their squad to rival Harry Kane in attack, with Vincent Janssen struggling as his back-up option last season.

Those two forwards are the only senior options in the squad, but they do posses a secret weapon in versatile attacker Son.

The 25-year-old usually operates from the left wing, but manager Mauricio Pochettino has used him in a central position in the past.

Ex-Spurs ace Ferdinand has stated that his former side have not needed to strengthen in attack as they have Son as another viable forward option.

“I understand everyone saying they need to bring in a striker but Heung-Min Son scored 20-odd last season,” Ferdinand told the Daily Star.

Son goes slightly under the radar in the Spurs side as he is pushed behind the likes of Kane, Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen in the limelight, but was superb for his side last season.

The South Korea international showed his brilliant touch in front of goal by scoring 21 goals in 47 appearances across all competitions, while also chipping in with 10 assists.

His incredible work-rate has made him a big asset to Pochettino’s style and he is valued as one of their best players.

OPINION

Spurs do have the option to use Son as a central striker, but that should only be used as a last resort. The attacker is much more effective playing out wide and there is no hiding that another striker is desperately needed at the north London club. They have ambitions of competing in both domestic and European competitions in the new season, meaning that Kane and Janssen are likely to need help. Spurs are still yet to spend in the transfer window and chairman Daniel Levy is renowned for making last minute signings. Fans will be hoping that a new central forward to bolster the squad will arrive, but they may have left it too late in the window to get a quality signing.
