OPINION

Everton are reportedly considering a late move for Watford striker Troy Deeney.

The Sun claim that the Toffees are plotting a swoop for the 29-year-old in the final week of the transfer window as they look to replace Romelu Lukaku in their side.

It is understood that the arrival of Andre Gray at Watford has alerted Premier League clubs to Deeney, with West Brom also interested in a move.

Ronald Koeman wants to bring in a central striker to Goodison Park and the Watford captain is on a shortlist alongside the likes of Cardiff’s Kenneth Zohore and Real Sociedad’s Willian Jose.

Deeney has established himself as a proven player in the Premier League recently and the explosive striker is recognised for his pace, strength and eye for goal.

Good move for Everton?

Everton already have the creative players in the shape of Gylfi Sigurdsson and Wayne Rooney that will chip in with goals, but need a powerful target man to lead the line.

Deeney would be a brilliant option for the Toffees and add the extra edge that the squad is missing.

He may not score as many goals as Lukaku did, but can play a similar role and there are a lot of good attackers fighting for a position in the Everton side.

Deeney is an unselfish player that would become a big favourite with the Merseyside fans and also has quality to go with that.

The Englishman made 43 appearances across all competitions for Watford in the 2015/16 season, scoring 15 goals and supplying 10 assists in return.

Likely to happen?

There is no clear indication that Watford captain Denney will leave in the summer, but the club’s interest in Leicester ace Islam Slimani could be a major hint.

He will be keen to play regular football and could find it difficult competing alongside new singing Andre Gray.

Everton are also very keen to land a new forward in the next few days and it would be no surprise to see Ronald Koeman sign someone with Premier League experience.

It is feasible that Deeney could make the switch to Goodison Park, but there is still a long way to go if this deal is to go through.
