Rangers are considering a late move for Cardiff’s 22-year-old left-back Declan John, according to Football Insider.

John hasn’t made an appearance yet for Cardiff this season and only managed 15 Championship appearances in the 2016/17 campaign.

He’s out of contract next summer and could well be looking for a move out, with Cardiff ready to cash in rather than lose him for free next summer.

Football Insider claim that Rangers are looking for a loan move with an option to buy, which would suit Pedro Caixinha’s budget.

He came up through the youth ranks at Cardiff, and has had two loan spells before, at Barnsley and Chesterfield.

Manager Neil Warnock is reported to be happy for him to leave and the player has only made one start for him since he took over in October.

Good move for Rangers?

It would be a very good move for Rangers. Caixinha is in need of depth in his squad and John offers versatility with the ability to play at left back or in midfield. It isn’t working out for him at Cardiff but he definitely has the quality to do a job in the Scottish Premiership. John is a Welsh international, although he’s only played one full 90 minutes back in 2013. He has been selected as a substitute a number of times.

Likely to happen?

Manager Neil Warnock obviously doesn’t see him as part of his future plans and John only has one year left on his contract. Warnock is said to be happy for him to move and the only question would be whether another side are willing to take him on a permanent deal. Rangers want him on loan with an option to buy and that’s surely better than Cardiff paying his wages and not playing him. At this late stage in the window this looks like it has legs.
