OPINION

Newcastle defender Grant Hanley is reportedly undergoing a medical at Championship club Norwich.

Sky Sports correspondent Keith Downie has claimed on his personal Twitter account that the 25-year-old is currently having his medical at Carrow Road.

It is understood that a fee was agreed on Tuesday between the Magpies and Norwich for the Scotland international.

Hanley played a role in Newcastle winning the 2016/17 Championship title as they were promoted back into the Premier League, but he is on the verge of an exit from St James’ Park.

Good move for Newcastle?

Newcastle won’t need Hanley in the upcoming season and selling him on makes sense.

The centre-back has slipped way down the pecking order following the signing of Florian Lejeune, while the likes of Jamaal Lascelles, Chancel Mbemba and Ciaran Clark are also blocking a permanent starting XI role.

He is more suited to Championship level and could play a big role in Norwich’s season if he starts well.

Meanwhile, Newcastle can try to use his sale to force through some incomings in the remaining of the transfer window even though they have left it late.

Likely to happen?

This deal looks to be a formality and should be completed very soon as Hanley undergoes his medical at Carrow Road.

The centre-back was always likely to leave after being omitted from the squad in the opening three games of the season and only featuring in the cup.

Rafael Benitez needs to trim his squad in order to bring new faces to Newcastle and Hanley was always set to be one of those players departing.

Norwich are also in need of some defensive reinforcements after a poor start to the campaign and this deal will be completed barring a huge turn.
