Goalkeeper and defenders

Sam Johnstone (Goalkeeper) – Despite conceding three goals against Cardiff, Johnstone will surely retain his place in between the sticks as Jed Steer has made just one appearance in three years.

James Bree (Right-back) – Bree, 19, should make his first Championship start of the season against Reading after Alan Hutton was torn to shreds by Mendez-Laing on Saturday while Ahmed El-Mohamady suffered a facial injury.

John Terry (Centre-back) – Terry could do nothing about Cardiff’s explosive attack, as his lack of pace was exposed. However, he must be given the chance to continue his education of the Championship against Reading.

James Chester (Centre-back) – Alongside Terry, Wales international Chester is the only Villa defender that can provide the pace needed to cover the former England captain’s lack of speed.

Neil Taylor (Left-back) –  Former Swansea defender Taylor is Bruce’s only choice for left-back following the sale of Jordan Amavi and he will surely start against Reading.
