Thomas Christiansen needs a new central defender at Leeds this summer and he must turn to Derby defender Jason Shackell to solve his problem area.

The Sun’s transfer expert Alan Nixon claimed on his personal Twitter account that Gary Rowett is set to orchestrate a major summer overhaul at the iPro Stadium, with three weeks left in the transfer window.

It is said that the Rams are willing to sell 33-year-old defender Shackell, after bringing in Curtis Davies from Hull City and former Liverpool defender Andre Wisdom for just £2million.

The experienced Championship defender has less than 12 months remaining on his current contract, and is likely to be available for a nominal fee if any interested parties declare their intention of signing Shackell.

Leeds should be one of those sides, with the injury suffered by Everton loanee Matthew Pennington leaving the Whites light at centre-back.

Only Liam Cooper and Pontus Jansson remain as Christiansen’s first-team options, with Conor Shaughnessy filling in at centre-back away from his usual position of central midfield.

A new central defender to provide cover is key and the experience of Shackell would give Leeds a huge boost both on and off the field in their pursuit of promotion back to the Premier League.

Shackell has made a huge 381 career appearances in England’s second division with the likes of Norwich, Burnley and Derby and offering his know how to young stars Shaughnessy and Pennington could bring the best out of the duo.

Known for his aerial prowess and aggressive approach to defending at the back, Shackell would give Leeds a steeliness in defence as Leeds target a return to the top flight for the first time in 13 years.

Owner Andrea Radrizzani will be much more willing to sanction a deal for Shackell who could move on the cheap, after confirming deals for 10 first-team stars as well as repurchasing Elland Road.

Championship experience, defensive know how and as part of bargain price, Shackell would be a top buy for Christiansen as he looks to solve his defensive problem area.
