Marcus Antonsson is on the verge of joining Blackburn Rovers on loan from Leeds United, according to BBC Radio Leeds.

The station revealed on their West Yorkshire Sport Twitter account this morning (Friday) that striker Antonsson is set to move later today to the League One outfit as they prepare to win the race for his signature ahead of other clubs.

Good move for Leeds?

Without a doubt. Garry Monk eventually came to the conclusion that Antonsson lacked the physicality and mobility to make an impact in the Championship, and Thomas Christiansen appears to be of the same opinion. The Swedish striker was barely involved during pre-season and the new manager’s selections for the opening two competitive fixtures demonstrate that Antonsson is not in his thoughts. Tellingly, the 26-year-old did not make the matchday 18 for the club’s League Cup win over Port Vale in midweek even though Christiansen rang the changes and gave opportunities to fringe players.

Likely to happen?

Given that the BBC only report transfers when the deal is done, it would represent a huge shock if Antonsson’s exit from the club is not imminently announced. The forward was signed from Swedish club Kalmar FF last summer for a fee of around £1.5million but he is surplus to requirements and a season on loan will benefit all parties. The player is in his peak years and needs regular game time, while Leeds will be keen for another club to pay the wages of someone who is not expected to feature.
