Tottenham are reportedly set to fine defender Danny Rose up to two weeks’s wages for his recent public comments criticising the club. They have every right to do so.

The Times claims that the 27-year-old will be fined around £140,000 after he revealed in an interview with the Sun that he was frustrated with the lack of new arrivals to the North London club this summer and also not pleased with his current weekly salary.

It is understood that Spurs are furious that the England international went public with his views and although they are determined not to lose the left-back this summer, they would be seeking around £50million for him.

Spurs are right to take a stand against a player who has put them in a difficult situation on the brink of the new Premier League season.

With Spurs fans likely to be disappointed with the lack of signings this summer, the last thing they needed was one of the best performers from last season to announce that he was contemplating leaving the club.

The Times reports that Rose informed his fellow teammates that he has no intention of leaving the club which begs the question why on earth he went public with his comments when it would have been better to speak with the club’s hierarchy about his current situation.

The North London club must prove that they will not succumb to player power and discipling the full-back will certainly encourage him not to make the same mistake in the future.

Tottenham have shown great faith in the defender over the years and current boss Mauricio Pochettino has managed to get the best out of him over the last two seasons.

Although Rose’s performances have played a role in helping Tottenham boast the best defensive record in the Premier League for the two seasons in a row, it has not still been enough to guarantee any silverware.

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy might have been willing to improve the player’s contract situation should he guide the team to their first piece of silverware since 2008 but Rose’s comments have certainly not helped his case.

The England international is set to miss the start of the Premier League season due to injury but it will be interesting to see whether he can replicate his recent form following the controversy surrounding his comments.
