Tottenham should try to sell Kevin Wimmer this summer and bring in a more reliable replacement to provide defensive cover in the squad.
The Mail report that that Southampton will target the 24-year-old if they lose Virgil van Dijk in the summer transfer window.
It is believed that Spurs could be tempted by a £20million offer and they should certainly accept that if they receive any bids in that region.
Mauricio Pochettino has two world-class centre-backs in Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen, but is perhaps short of quality options in reserve.
Wimmer is one of the first-team options that provides cover in defence alongside Eric Dier and Cameron Carter-Vickers, but there are serious questions marks over his ability.
The Austria international proved an adequate back-up option in the 2015/16 campaign and impressed during his 21 appearances for the club.
However, he only featured 10 times across all competitions last season and looks like a player that needs to featuring on a regular basis to perform.
Wimmer has been given a chance on Spurs’ pre-season tour, but has looked very out of touch and proved that he can’t meet the high demands.
The centre-back looked very nervous on the ball and his miscued pass cost a goal in a friendly 3-2 defeat to Roma.
His days with the north London club appear to be coming to an end and he will benefit from a move to help reignite his stuttering career.
Spurs are going to need a fully strong squad if they are to achieve their aims of competing for silverware across all competitions and Wimmer is someone that is not up to scratch right now.
