Celtic icon Chris Sutton has admitted that he is ‘surprised’ by Rangers’ decision to sell Barrie McKay after he joined Nottingham Forest on a four-year deal.

The Scottish winger joined up with Mark Warburton at the City Ground on Wednesday, despite him being one of the more promising prospects to emerge from the Gers’ academy in recent years.

Warburton has clearly spotted what Pedro Caixinha hasn’t in McKay – and Sutton has hinted that he honestly believes it might be a mistake on behalf of the Portuguese boss.

“Talented player who lost his way a little bit but I’m surprised Rangers let him go,” said the former England international about McKay on his personal Twitter account on Wednesday afternoon.

McKay, 22, is the second Scottish Premiership player to join up with Warburton in the East Midlands, as he follows in the steps of Jason Cummings, who helped Hibernian secure promotion to the top-flight last term.

The ex-Gers winger proved to be a crucial player last season for the Light Blues, even though the club as a whole proved underwhelming in their return to the top-tier.

He made 46 appearances across all competitions, scoring six goals and supplying a respectable 11 assists.

Sutton, 44, spent six years playing for Celtic and makes no secret of his animosity towards Rangers as he fought several Old Firm derbies during a career which also saw him turn out for Norwich, Blackburn and Chelsea.

McKay’s sale is the latest transfer activity involving Rangers, who have added eight players to their ranks since last season ended.
