Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy has held extensive talks about the sale of Eric Dier to Manchester United, according to the Telegraph.

The newspaper claim that Spurs’ long-standing chairman has been in negotiations with United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward “in the background” about a mega-money deal that would take the England international to Old Trafford.

The Telegraph report that United have had one bid rejected for Dier, 23, but a sensational transfer is still possible.

It is said that Levy has refused to place a valuation on the head of the versatile ace, who can play in central defence or the midfield anchorman role in which United are keen to play.

But Tottenham would still listen to an offer in the region of £50million for Dier even though manager Mauricio Pochettino is under no pressure to sell the mainstays of his team.

Intriguingly, Unitred manager Jose Mourinho is pushing hard to sign Dier and has stepped up his pursuit after hitting a brick wall in his bid to entice Nemanja Matic from Chelsea.

The Telegraph report that United’s imminent signing of Romelu Lukaku from Everton has ended their pursuit of Matic as they know Chelsea, who also want the striker, will not now sell him.

Dier is attracted at the promise of a regular central midfield role at United, who could also offer him a £150,000-a-week salary that would be double his current package.
