Sviatchenko was aware of January transfer rumours

Celtic ace Erik Sviatchenko has admitted he was aware of the transfer rumours which linked him to Leicester in January.

The 25-year-old centre-back was a mainstay in the Hoops’ back line last term, and his impressive performances drew interest from the Foxes.

However, a deal failed to come to fruition and the Danish defender stayed at Parkhead, where he hopes to kick-on next season.

He told the Scottish Sun of the January speculation: “Of course I was aware of things, as you are when you are a football player and are in one of the two transfer windows.

“If you are performing there will always be interest. In the transfer windows there will always be talk and rumours, some of them are true and some of them are untrue, but you need to stay focused.

“I’ve good players and managers around me. They know me and I am the best player I can be, so I am enjoying the time here.”

Sviatchenko was one of the Bhoys’ most consistent performers last season, making 43 appearances across all competitions.

He arrived in Glasgow in January 2016 in a £2million switch from Danish outfit FC Midtjylland , and he has since played 61 league and cup games for the club.

The Dane helped the Hoops to a historic domestic treble last term as they won the Scottish Premiership, the Scottish Cup and the Scottish League Cup.

Sviatchenko has been capped on five occasions by Denmark, but he has not featured since the 1-0 friendly defeat to Scotland in March of last year.

The 25-year-old returned to his homeland to get married this summer, and after he travelled to Barcelona for his honeymoon.
