Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has hinted that he is ready to offer Scott Brown a contract extension as he revealed talks have already taken place.

The 32-year-old central midfielder’s current deal at Parkhead runs out next summer, but Rodgers has hailed his importance to the club.

Brown captained the Hoops to a historic domestic treble last term, as the club won the Scottish Premiership, the Scottish Cup and the Scottish League Cup.

The Scottish international led from the front, and he was one of the club’s top performers, making 54 appearances in all competitions.

In an interview with the Daily Record Rodgers heaped praise on the 32-year-old.

“Scott’s someone I want here while I’m here, that’s for sure. He’s a remarkable player who will go down as one of the greatest captains in the club’s history,” he said.

“He’s done it over the course of 10 years here but what he did last season puts him alongside the greatest captains.

“Scott’s still hungry and driven to keep winning and performing. You see the level he’s at. He has turned 32 but is coming in to an exciting period in his career.

“He’s definitely someone I’ll be looking to do something with. Him and I have talked about [a new deal] a few times. It’s something we’ll look at. He’ll be around for another few years just yet.”

Brown arrived at Parkhead in the summer of 2007 in a £5.6million move from Hibernian, and he has since played 416 league and cup games for the club, which have yielded 37 goals and 55 assists.

He has been capped by Scotland on 53 occasions, and he played the full 90 minutes as nation drew 2-2 with England in a World Cup qualifier last month.

Despite guiding the Glasgow giants to a treble in his first season in charge, Rodgers is still looking to strengthen his squad this summer.

The manager has brought in Kundai Benyu from Ipswich and Jonny Hayes from Aberdeen so far.
