Tottenham have pulled the plug on their bid to sign Porto right-back Ricardo Pereira and are ready to end their pursuit of Everton playmaker Ross Barkley, according to the Mail.

The newspaper claim that Spurs have “shelved any plans” to sign Pereira despite selling Kyle Walker to Manchester City last week for a world-record defender fee of £54million.

The Mail report that the London giants are also “cooling their interest” in Barkley and are not opting to pursue him at this stage.

It is said that Tottenham were expected to make a big push to sign the England international but that has not yet transpired after Everton slapped a £50million asking price on their prize asset.

Reports at the weekend stated that the Merseysiders are ready to compromise on the fee they will demand for Barkley, who has entered the final year of his contract and snubbed offers of an extension.

This gave Spurs fans hope that they could sign a player who has reportedly blown away their manager Mauricio Pochettino with his talent and potential to improve.

The Mail update suggests the team who finished second in the Premier League are now looking elsewhere for their attacking midfield and right-back targets.

They are the only side in the English top flight who have not yet signed any players in the summer transfer window.

This comes after the Evening Standard reported last week that Porto were confident Tottenham would pay the full £22million asking price needed to secure the signing of Pereira.

The defender has spent the last two seasons on loan at French side Nice and was a mainstay of the team that challenged for the Ligue 1 title last season before eventually securing a third place finish.
