Tottenham kicked into transfer action on Friday by agreeing to loan left-back Connor Ogilvie to League One club Gillingham – but Spurs fans on Twitter were distinctly underwhelmed.

Spurs announced on their official website and social media channels that Ogilvie, 21, has joined the third-tier outfit on a loan deal that runs until January of next year.

The defender completed a transfer to Gillingham on Friday after first putting pen to paper on a separate deal, which is a new Tottenham contract that runs until 2019.

Supporters of the north Londoners reacted to the announcement by urging the club to seal more notable deals, including either new signings or agreeing extended contracts with first-teamers such as key man Toby Alderweireld.

Some claimed Ogilvie’s double deal was not the news they wanted to hear while one sarcastically acclaimed a signing after a player had penned Spurs terms.

This Is Futbol has rounded up some of the best tweets:

Spurs have been notably quiet in the early parts of the summer transfer window and this is the first move that they have agreed.

In comparison, Everton have been working overtime on recruiting new players, while title rivals Manchester United completed the signing of Romelu Lukaku on Saturday morning for a reported £90million fee.

Ogilvie has yet to make a first team appearance for Spurs but he is regarded as a player of promise at the club and has been rewarded for his progress with a two-year contract extension.

The youngster, who has represented England at Under-17 and Under-18 level, has spent much of the last two seasons on loan at League Two Stevenage.

He made 18 appearances for Stevenage last season after joining in the January window and was a mainstay in his preferred left-back position.

Ogilvie will expect to be a mainstay at Gillingham even though he has moved up a division and will be playing at a higher standard.
