Everton could seal the capture of former star Wayne Rooney over “the coming days” after reaching a breakthrough in negotiations on Friday, according to the Manchester Evening News.

The report details that a deal is “now effectively done” and is now waiting on an official announcement with the 31-year-old set to become the Toffees’ sixth signing of the summer.

The Merseysiders have been busy once more in the transfer market with Ronald Koeman looking to build a team ready to compete across all fronts with a Europa League campaign coming up and the club are the current highest spenders in the Premier League.

They have already brought in Englan dinternational duo Jordan Pickford and Michael Keane for big money while Davy Klaassen also commanded an eight-figure sum from Ajax.

Young duo Henry Onyekuru and Sandro Ramirez have also followed through the Goodison Park door, with the Nigerian immediately joining Anderlecht on loan.

Rooney could now be the next one to join after departing Everton for Manchester United in a £25.6million deal thirteen years a go.

He has since became England and Manchester United’s all time top goal scorer alongside winning five Premier League titles, one FA Cup, one Europa League and a Champions League medal.

The former Three Lions captain will be returning a much more experienced player after leaving leaving as a teenager, while current Everton star Romelu Lukaku looks to be heading in the opposite direction to Old Trafford.
