Michael Owen delivers verdict on Lukaku deal

Michael Owen has described Romelu Lukaku’s transfer to Manchester United as an “odd situation” after boss Jose Mourinho previously sold the striker.

Manchester United confirmed that a fee had been agreed for the 24-year-old Everton forward on Saturday on the club’s official Twitter account, and stated that an announcement would follow.

Former Manchester United, Newcastle and Liverpool striker Michael Owen delivered his verdict on his official Twitter account on Sunday, and stated that Lukaku was a good fit for Mourinho’s squad.

However, the footballer turned broadcaster said that he believed the deal between the pair was odd as Mourinho sold the Belgian from Chelsea in 2014 during his second managerial spell at the London club.

The Belgium international joined Chelsea in 2011 from Anderlecht in a deal worth over £12 million, and spent a few seasons on loan at both West Bromwich Albion and Everton, before moving to the Merseyside club on a more permanent basis in 2014 for £30 million.

Since moving to the Toffees, the forward has proven himself as a world class striker and he has scored 87 goals during 166 appearances throughout all competitions over the past three seasons.

Mourinho will hope that securing the goal-machine will improve United’s chances of winning the title next season after the club finished in a disappointing sixth position in the Premier League table during their 2016/17 campaign.
