Chelsea defender Todd Kane has confirmed that he will be spending the upcoming season on loan to Dutch side FC Groningen.

The right-back revealed the move on his official Twitter account, accompanied by pictures of him in the club’s gear and at their stadium.

Kane, who turns 24 in September, is a graduate of the Chelsea academy, having progressed through the youth ranks at Stamford Bridge to help the Blues pick up a FA Youth Cup and an Under-21s league title.

However, he is yet to make an appearance for the senior side, and has instead spent the majority of the last five seasons on loan to a variety of clubs in both the lower tiers of English football as well as a stint at Dutch side NEC Nijmegen.

However, his spell in Holland was cut short as the result of an anterior cruciate ligament injury, and he returned to London for his recovery process.

Now he is set to make a return to the Netherlands and will do so under the same manager he had at NEC in the shape of former defender Ernest Faber, who will be hoping to improve on Groningen’s eighth placed finish in the Eredivisie last season.

Kane also has experience at youth level for England, having appeared in eight matches for the U19s, while he was an unused substitute for the U21s on three occasions.
