Ipswich Town have beaten Leeds United in the race to sign Wolves defender Dominic Iorfa for the upcoming season.

Ipswich announced on their official website and Twitter account on Friday evening that they had signed the right-back, 22, on a season-long loan from the Midlands club.

Iorfa will link up with manager Mick McCarthy’s first team squad immediately ahead of the 2017-18 campaign after completing a medical on Friday morning.

Radio Yorkshire journalist Joe Rawson, who is a reliable source of Leeds news, claims the defender has made the move after United tried to beat Ipswich to his signature.

Rawson explained on his personal Twitter account on Friday night that Thomas Christiansen’s side wanted to sign Iorfa on a permanent transfer but their bid was rejected.

The new Leeds manager has made it clear that his priority is now to sign defenders after sanctioning an extensive recruitment drive that has focused on adding midfielders and attacking players to his squad.

There have been nine arrivals this summer, with the headline signings central midfielder Vurnon Anita, playmaker Samuel Saiz and right-winger Ezgjan Alioski.

Former England Under-21 international Iorfa was a mainstay of Wolves’ back line last term, making 25 appearances across all competitions.

He broke into the first team at Molineux in the summer of 2013, and he has since gone on to establish himself as a first-team regular with a total of 93 league and cup games for the club.

Iorfa is primarily a right-back, but he is also comfortable in central defence, a position in which he was used on a number of occasions last season.
