Former Chelsea assistant manager Ray Wilkins has urged Rangers to stop buying “B players from Benfica”.

Gers manager Pedro Caixinha has not wasted any time in this summer’s transfer window and he has already brought eight new faces to Glasgow.

Among the eight are Fabio Cardoso, Dalcio and Daniel Candeias – three players who failed to make the grade at Benfica and found themselves stuck in the B team.

Wilkins has urged Rangers to stop and told YouTube account Rangers Fans Channel: “I don’t quite agree with bringing in B players from Benfica, B players from this and B players from that.

“My way forward would be to take some Chelsea young men up there who aren’t quite getting into the Under-23 side and stick them in there and give them a proper grounding in football.

“Because up there they will get sorted out quite a bit as well, it’s very physical, the referee is totally different to what it is down in England and I think it would do them a world of good.”

Chelsea have been known to loan out a high volume of their young players and Wilkins believes it is an untapped resource that Rangers should take advantage of.

The other five players to arrive at Ibrox so far this summer are Ryan Jack, Carlos Pena, Eduardo Herrera, Alfredo Morelos and Bruno Alves.

The Gers finished third in last season’s Scottish Premiership, nine points behind Aberdeen, and a massive 39 points behind their traditional rivals Celtic.

Caixinha promised a summer of upheaval at Ibrox and he has delivered so far, but there could be even more signings as he prepares his squad for to challenge the Hoops on all fronts next term.
