Stuttgart sporting director Jan Schindelmeiser has dismissed the claims that Leeds United have made an approach to sign Alexandru Maxim.

Schindelmeiser’s comments come after a report in Romanian outlet Digi Sport claimed United were “very close” to securing a deal for the 26-year-old attacking midfielder.

It was said Maxim was keen on a new challenge and that he would make a decision on his future when he returns from a holiday.

However, his club’s sporting director has now poured cold water on the rumours in an interview with German publication Stuttgart Nachrtichten.

“We do not have any requests from Leeds,” Schindelmeiser said.

Meanwhile, German sports newspaper BILD reported that the playmaker was not interested in a move to the Championship outfit.

BILD also claimed the Bundesliga new boys are ready to sell Maxim this summer if their £2.6million asking price is met, but the player is not interested in a move to the English second tier.

The playmaker, who is also comfortable on the left wing, made 27 appearances in all competitions for Stuttgart last term, which yielded five goals and seven assists.

He joined Stuttgart from Romanian side Pandurii Targu Jiu in January 2013, and he has since provided 35 assists and scored 17 goals in 131 league and cup games for the club.

Maxim’s record from his time in the German top tier with Stuttgart stands out, with 91 games yielding 11 goals and 25 assists.

The 26-year-old has been capped by Romania on 27 occasions, but he has not featured since the 4-3 friendly defeat to Ukraine in May 2015.
