Pumas manager Francisco Palencia has given a glowing review of attacker Eduardo Herrera as he reportedly closes in on a move to Rangers.

The Daily Record claimed last week that the 28-year-old centre-forward was closing in on £1.5million move to the Scottish club, and had arrived in Glasgow on Sunday to put the finishing touches on the deal.

However, a more recent report from the same source claims that Herrera is still awaiting a work permit before completing the move, but could be given the green light later this week.

A nine-time Mexico international, Herrera netted just six goals from 28 appearances in all competitions for Pumas last season, and his current manager insists Rangers will be getting a top player.

He said, as quoted by the Daily Record: “He’s 28, but I still think of him as a youngster. He’s always been a very professional player. He’s quick, strong, aggressive and knows how to score goals.

“I think he will do very well in Scottish football because of all the qualities he has. He’s an excellent player and I hope he manages to score goals for Rangers. I wish him the best of luck.”

Herrera could be set to complete his move to Ibrox alongside fellow Mexican international star Carlos Pena, who is also awaiting a work permit before completing the move.

The two players are likely to become the sixth and seventh signings made by Rangers and manager Pedro Caixinha already this summer, with the Portuguese making drastic changes to the first-team squad.

Rangers have already snapped up Bruno Alves, Ryan Jack, Fabio Cardoso, Dalcio and Daniel Candeias, but Caixinha is showing little let-up in his summer transfer plans with Herrera’s arrival seemingly imminent.

Herrera will compete alongside current Rangers goalscorers Kenny Miller and Martyn Waghorn for a place in the starting eleven next season.
