Santos Laguna club president Alejandro Irarragorri has confirmed he has been in talks with Rangers manager Pedro Caixinha over an Ibrox move for Jose Javier Abella.

A Scottish Sun report claims the Gers boss is set to bring in Carlos Pena and Eduardo Herrera if they are granted work permits, and Abella could be the third Mexican arrival of the summer.

It is said Caixinha has been linked with a move for the 23-year-old right-back for some time, but this is the first time a representative from the Mexican top-flight club has responded to the speculation.

Irarragorri told the Scottish Sun: “I talk a lot with Pedro Caixinha and he has good reason for taking the two Mexicans to Scottish football.

“And there is a player at Santos that interests him. We are in negotiations about him.

“I think it’s wonderful that we can contribute to the internationalisation of Mexican football. There could be three Mexicans playing in Scotland next season.”

This comes after Fox Sport Mexico correspondent Francisco Montes was cited in a report on the broadcaster’s website linking Rangers with a move for the 23-year-old ace.

The Mexican right-back was a bit-part player at Santos this term, making only 13 appearances in all competitions.

He broke into the club’s senior squad in the summer of 2013, and he has since played 133 league and cup games.

Abella represented his nation at the 2016 Olympic Games, and played in two of their matches, but he has not been capped by the side since.

Caixinha is keen to overhaul his squad this summer and he should know the right-back well having managed Santos between 2013 and 2015.
