New Leeds United manager Thomas Christiansen is lining up a swoop for former Premier League striker Matt Derbyshire, according to the Mail.

The newspaper claim that Christiansen in ready to offer Derbyshire, 31, a return to English football following his eyecatching exploits in Cyprus last season.

The Mail report that the Leeds boss, who was appointed on Thursday, tried to sign the Omonia Nicosia striker when he was in charge at his previous club Apoel “but the deal proved too difficult given the rivalry between the biggest two teams in Cyprus”.

It is said that Christiansen is now weighing up a second move for Derbyshire as he begins plans to overhaul the Leeds playing squad in readiness for the new season.

Derbyshire is well known to English audiences for his spells at Blackburn Rovers, Birmingham City, Nottingham Forest and Rotherham, and has accumulated 212 appearances in the Premier League and Championship.

But it is at Omnosia where he has been at the most prolific in his career, with his 26 goals in Cyprus in 2016-17 firing him to the prestigious Golden Boot.

Leeds are in the market for a new forward after relying heavily for goals on Championship top scorer Chris Wood in the recently completed domestic season in which they mounted a strong play-offs challenge before eventually finishing in seventh.

Derbyshire has 12 months remaining on his contract at Omnosia.
