Rangers would take a huge leap in catching Old Firm rivals Celtic with the signing of Middlesbrough freebie Stewart Downing this summer.

The Sun claim Middlesbrough fan favourite Downing is set to leave the club for a second time this summer, after being told by manager Garry Monk that he is no longer needed on Teesside.

He is set to join Brad Guzan and Victor Valdes in leaving the club, and Pedro Caixinha must take advantage by taking him north of the divide to Glasgow this summer.

Rangers have already made eight summer signings in Bruno Alves, Fabio Cardoso, Ryan Jack, Dalcio, Daniel Candeias, Carlos Pena, Eduardo Herrera and Alfredo Morelos, but Downing could push that number closer to double figures.

This Is FutbolĀ analyses three reasons why the former England international would prove to be a crucial signing should Caixinha move for the 32-year-old ace.
