Chris Sutton believes Rangers manager Pedro Caixinha would have realised that it is better to do his talking on the pitch rather than off it.

The Portuguese coach, who moved to Ibrox in March replacing Mark Warburton in the dugout, made a number of bold comments upon his arrival.

At one stage he claimed that Rangers have the best squad in Scotland and he also played down Aberdeen by stating they had already reached their peak before the season had ended.

Caixinha’s comments didn’t go down too well because his team suffered a 2-1 defeat against the Dons during the penultimate match of the season.

As a result, Derek McIness’ team comfortably finished above Caixinha’s side, with Celtic running away with the Scottish Premiership title.

Ahead of the new season, Caixinha has already made a number of changes to his squad, including signing Euro 2016 winner Bruno Alves.

Former Premier League striker Sutton urged the Rangers senior man to learn from his mistakes and let his team’s performances on the field of play do the talking.

“Pedro has had a lot to say and he took on an enormously tough job with a squad of players who really underperformed under Mark Warburton,” Sutton told the Daily Record.

“It was never going to be easy and he didn’t help himself with a lot of what he had to say and focusing on Aberdeen.

“After Aberdeen played Rangers off the park at Ibrox at the end of the season Pedro would, I’m sure, have realised it’s better to do his talking on the pitch. And this season it’s his team.”

The Gers finished the 2016/17 season in third place, nine points behind second-placed Aberdeen and a mammoth 39 points behind their bitter rivals Celtic.

During his time at Rangers, Caixinha suffered two defeats from his 11 matches, including a humiliating 5-1 loss against their Old Firm rivals on home soil.

After a poor campaign, he will be hoping his team can mount a better title challenge next term.
