Rangers icon Derek Johnstone does not believe fans will be too disheartened at the club’s decision to axe Joe Garner.

The club confirmed on their official Twitter account on Friday that the 29-year-old attacker had completed a move to Ipswich Town, following a disappointing one-year spell at Ibrox.

Garner scored just seven goals from 31 appearances during his one and only season in the Scottish Premiership last term, and completed the full 90 minutes of a league game on just nine occasions.

But he returns to the Championship ahead of the 2017-18 campaign having excelled in the competition with Preston North End prior to his move to Scotland.

He becomes the fifth senior player to quit Ibrox this summer, with experienced defenders Clint Hill and Philippe Senderos both released from their contracts, and on loan duo Jon Toral and Emerson Hydman returning to their parent clubs.

However, Johnstone, who made 523 appearances for Rangers during his professional career, believes fans will be happy to see the back of their attacking flop.

He wrote in his column for the Evening Times: “There are few Rangers supporters that will be sad to see Joe Garner leave Ibrox and now Pedro Caixinha will hope that another handful follow him out of the club.

“Some of the fans did take to Joe and he became a bit of a cult hero earlier in the season, but he has been disappointing and I don’t think too many will be upset to see him join Ipswich Town.

“When you are a striker at Rangers you have to score goals, and Joe didn’t do that often enough.”

Rangers revealed on their official club website that Garner had joined Ipswich for an undisclosed fee, and had put pen-to-paper on a three-year deal at the English club.

But the Scottish Sun, meanwhile, have reported that terms over a seven-figure fee were agreed at £1million, which stands at a loss of £800,000 from when he joined the club a year ago.
