Griffiths hoping to score against England

Celtic ace Leigh Griffiths believes Scotland’s clash against England on Saturday is the “perfect game” to break his goalscoring duck.

The 26-year-old is yet to find the back of the net in 12 appearances for his home country and he has the chance to break that drought against England in a crucial World Cup qualifier at Hampden.

Gareth Southgate’s side, who beat the Scot’s 3-0 in November at Wembley, will prove to be tough opponents given the fact that they top Group F.

Both home countries are vying to earn a place for the 2018 World Cup in Russia, with Gordon Strachan’s side currently sitting in fourth place.

Nonetheless, prior to the weekend match, Griffiths is hoping he can help his country cause an upset and claim all three points against their rivals.

“It would be the perfect game to break my duck in for Scotland so I’ll put in a hard week’s training beforehand and hopefully be in the manager’s plans,” said Griffiths, as quoted by the Scottish Sun.

“There are a lot of options for him when it comes to playing that lone striker role.

“But I’ll work hard and if the manager puts me in there I’ll be raring to go.”

Fulham striker Chris Martin scored a late winner for Strachan’s team against Slovenia during their previous World Cup qualifier.

Griffiths started that encounter, missing a number of guilt edge opportunities before he was substituted after 50 minutes by his manager.

The Celtic forward, who scored 18 goals for his treble-winning side this season, will be looking to bring that success onto the international stage.

During his 12 international matches, Griffiths has only started five of those encounters and completed the full 90 minutes on only one occasion.
