Tottenham are eyeing up a move for 26-year-old striker Gregoire Defrel from Italian side Sassuolo, according to TuttoMercartoWeb.

The Italian football news website claims that the North London side are one of four Premier League clubs who are keeping tabs on the 26-year-old.

Fellow London side West Ham, former Premier League champions Leicester and south coast club Southampton are all named as potential suitors.

French forward Defrel, who can also operate as a second striker or on the left wing, shone for Sassuolo last season, hitting 16 goals and chipping in with five assists in 38 appearances across all competitions, with 12 league goals helping the northern Italian side to a 12th placed finish in Serie A.

It proved to be the most prolific season yet for the striker, who has made 73 appearances and scored 23 goals since joining from fellow Italian side AC Cesena in the summer of 2015.

Tottenham currently have Harry Kane and Vincent Janssen available as their recognised centre forwards, with winger Heung-Min Son, who can also slot in up top, out of action with a broken arm.

Dutch international Janssen has failed to hit the expected heights since his move from AZ Alkmaar, with the 23-year-old hitting just six goals in 38 appearances across all competitions for Spurs.

Mauricio Pochettino will be thankful Spurs did not suffer as a result, with Harry Kane hitting top form and scoring 29 goals in 30 Premier League appearances to finish the season as the top flight’s highest scorer.
