West Ham United have decided not to pursue Manchester United defender Chris Smalling this summer, according to the Daily Star.

This comes after the same newspaper claimed that the Hammers were one of three Premier League clubs interested in signing the 27-year-old.

The Daily Star claims that manager Slaven Bilic believes that his side do not need any strengthening in defence following the fine performances from Winston Reid last season.

It reports that United manager Jose Mourinho is willing to let the £15million valued defender leave Old Trafford in the summer but it appears that he will not be moving to East London.

The Hammers struggled to keep clean sheets last season, conceding a total of 64 Premier League goals compared to the 51 goals conceded during the 2015-16 campaign.

Smalling was unable to maintain a regular place in the starting lineup for United last season due to a combination of injuries and the manager not putting his faith in the defender.

The England international only made 18 Premier League appearances and he helped keep four clean sheets in the process.

However, Smalling played the full 90 minutes as United defeated Ajax in the Europa League final in Stockholm.

The Englishman has enjoyed a successful career at Old Trafford so far, winning two league titles, an FA Cup, a League Cup and a Europa League trophy.

Smalling’s contract at United expires in the summer of 2019.
