Tottenham are preparing a £17.5million move for Schalke attacking midfielder Max Meyer, according to a report in The Sun.

The newspaper claim that the Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino bid on the 21-year-old during the last transfer window, and wants to strike again.

The Sun revealed that during last summer’s transfer window the Tottenham manager eventually swooped on Moussa Sissoko instead of Meyer after Schalke refused to decrease their £45 million asking price.

It is said that Pochettino is still keen on the Bundesliga playmaker and will move again during the coming transfer window.

The German Under-21 is entering the last 12 months of his contract and it is thought that Meyer is keen to move as Schalke aren’t competing in Europe during the 2017/18 campaign.

The Sun cites German newspaper Bild, saying that Schalke will put the player up for sale as he enters the final year of his contract.

Pochettino will be able to entice the young midfielder to north London with the promise of both Premier League football, and a spot in the Champions League after the club finished in second place last season.

The Spurs boss will be looking to bolster his squad’s attacking prowess for the 2017/18 season, and Meyer could provide the support the team need after displaying a consistent performance over the past few seasons for Schalke.

Since joining the Bundesliga club back in 2013, the German Under-21 has made a total of 164 appearances, where the starlet provided 21 goals and a further 23 assists during that time.
