Alderweireld reveals no contract offer on table from Tottenham

|

Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld has rubbished reports suggesting he has rebuffed a fresh contract offer from the club.

The 28-year-old has been a key player at the club, and one of manager Mauricio Pochettino’s most reliable performers since his arrival from Southampton in 2015.

He still has three years left to run on his initial five-year-deal, but Tottenham have been keen to strike a fresh agreement as they continue their bid to retain their most prized assets.

The likes of Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Hugo Lloris all signed fresh contracts last season, and Alderweireld is the next Tottenham star on the list.

However, the Daily Mail had reported that contract negotiations between the two parties had stalled, as the Belgian international was seeking a deal worth more than double his current £50,000-per-week earnings.

His reported demands would have seen him on par with Kane on a contract worth up to £110,000-per-week, a figure which Tottenham were reluctant to sanction.

But the player has since dismissed speculation that contract talks had reached an impasse, whilst admitting that no talks had even begun with Tottenham over a new deal.

He said, as quoted by Sky Sports in their live transfer centre blog on Wednesday (13:03pm): “There is no talk now, so it’s all rumours, because if there’s no talk there’s no rejection as well.

“We will see in future how it will go.”

Alderweireld made 39 appearances in all competitions for Tottenham last season, as they secured a second successive top-four Premier League finish, and a return to the Champions League.

The defender is currently on international duty with Belgium, but attention will soon turn back to his Tottenham duties ahead of the 2017-18 campaign.
