Southampton are interested in signing Tottenham defender Kevin Wimmer this summer – but they are not willing to pay the asking price of £20million, according to the Mirror.

The newspaper claims that the Saints believe that the 24-year-old defender is the perfect long-term replacement for former club captain Jose Fonte who moved to fellow Premier League side West Ham United in January.

This comes after the recent report in the Sun which claimed that the North London club are willing to offload Wimmer during the summer transfer window but they will only offload the centre-back for £20million.

The Mirror reports that Spurs would need to reduce the asking price because Southampton are unwilling to splash out £20million for the defender.

It also claims that Southampton are confident Wimmer could partner Virgil Van Dijk in the back four despite the Dutchman being heavily linked with a summer move away from St Mary’s.

The Saints struggled to keep clean sheets last season as they conceded a total of 48 Premier League goals – the highest amount of league goals Southampton have conceded since the 2012-13 campaign.

Wimmer has been unable to become a first-team regular at Tottenham since his move to the club at the start of the 2015-16 season.

The Austrian has only made 15 Premier League appearances for the North London club in two seasons.

Wimmer’s contracts at the club expires in 2021.
