Cristiano Ronaldo is interested in making a sensational return to Manchester United, according to Sky Sports.

The broadcaster claimed on their transfer centre blog on Sunday evening (7.39pm) that the Real Madrid superstar is open to a second spell at the Premier League giants.

This follows reports that United are keen to explore the viability of bringing Ronaldo, 32, back to Old Trafford after his Real future was sensationally thrown up into the air last week.

Sources close to the forward claimed he wants to quit the Bernabeu after the recent allegations of tax fraud against him and has instructed his agency Gestifute to find him a new club.

The Sunday Times claim that United are “exploring the viability” of buying back Ronaldo eight years after selling him for a then-record £80million.

The Premier League giants face the prominent competition from Paris Saint-Germain to sign the Portugese, whose reputation remains sky-high after a remarkable finish to the 2016-17 season in which he scored twice in the Champions League final to secure Real’s third triumph in that competition in four years.

There is scepticism in some quarters about whether Ronaldo would leave Real this summer but the latest update from Sky Sports suggests the player is willing to make what would be a remarkable return to the Premier League.

This will be greeted with universal delight among United supporters across the globe given the huge impact he made during his first spell at Old Trafford and the consistently outstanding form during his eight years at Real since quitting Old Trafford in 2009.

Ronaldo has made 394 appearances in all competitions during his eight years in Madrid, which have yielded a remarkable 406 goals and 125 assists.

His reputation as an all-time great was further enhanced following a season in which his 42 goals from 46 matches in all competitions spearheaded Real’s La Liga and Champions League double.

Ronaldo has also scored 73 goals from 139 international appearances and inspired Portugal to their Euro 2016 triumph 12 months ago.
