Defender Adam Smith appears to have snubbed a potential return to Tottenham as he revealed he intends to return to Bournemouth next season.

This comes after a Daily Express report claimed Spurs were eyeing a swoop for the 26-year-old right-back, as manager Mauricio Pochettino attempts to replace Kyle Walker.

However, Smith squashed the rumours of a possible return to Spurs, where he began his career, in an interview with the Mirror on Monday.

“Transfer talk is part of football and speculation builds at the end of every season,” he said.

“It is always nice to be talked about in a positive way, because it means you are doing something right. I would rather that than be getting bad press.

“But I am a Bournemouth player and planning to have a nice holiday and then come back here next season.

“To finish where we did last season was a great achievement for the lads, the staff and the whole club. Hopefully we can stay together and try and have an even better season.”

Smith graduated from Spurs’ academy in 2008 but he failed to break into the senior squad during his six seasons at the club, making just two appearances.

He was instead loaned out to the likes of Wycombe, Torquay, Bournemouth, MK Dons, Leeds, Millwall and Derby, before making a permanent move to the Cherries in January 2014.

The 26-year-old has amassed 155 appearances in all competitions during his two spells at the club, making the right-back spot his own.

Smith was a top performer in the Cherries’ 2016/17 Premier League campaign, playing 35 games and providing an impressive five assists.

In his youth he was capped by England-Under 21s on 12 occasions, and was part of the 2013 European Under-21 Championships squad.
