Newcastle United are currently in talks with Italian side Hellas Verona to sign midfielder Romulo this summer, according to a reliable journalist.

Nicolo Schira, who is an Italian journalist for La Gazzetta dello Sport, claimed on his personal Twitter account that the newly-promoted Premier League side are holding discussions with the Italian outfit to sign the 30-year-old midfielder.

Romulo is not the only experienced midfielder who has been linked with a move to St James’ Park this summer as the Northern Echo recently reported that Newcastle made an enquiry about Liverpool veteran Lucas Leiva.

Romulo was in fantastic form last season, scoring four goals and providing 10 assists in 41 appearances in all competitions.

The midfielder’s contribution helped his side to secure a second-placed finish and achieve automatic promotion to the top-tier of the Italian football next season.

Hellas Verona finished rock bottom in the Serie A league table during the 2015-16 season but they have managed to bounce right back at the first attempt.

Romulo played for Italian giants Juventus during the 2014-15 campaign and although the club managed to clinch a league and cup double, the Brazilian only made five appearances in all competitions as he suffered from injuries.

The midfielder’s current contract at Hellas Verona runs out in 2019.
