Newcastle’s long serving Dutch goalkeeper Tim Krul could be on his way out of the club after French side Montepellier registered their interest in signing him, according to the Chronicle.

The newspaper claim on their website that the 29-year-old, who spent last season out on loan in his homeland at Ajax and AZ Alkmaar, is one of a number of goalkeepers shortlisted by the Ligue 1 side, after a move for Dijon stopper Baptiste Reynet hit setbacks.

Krul, a fan favourite at St James’ Park due to his loyalty and positive relationship with the fanbase, has been at Newcastle since 2005 after signing from his hometown club ADO Den Haag.

During his time at the North East side, he has gone on to make 185 appearances between the sticks, keeping 53 clean sheets.

His last game for the Magpies came when the side were hammered 6-1 by Manchester City in October 2015, before suffering a cruciate ligament injury for the Netherlands which ruled him out of the entirety of the season.

Sent on loan to earn game time following the arrival of fellow goalkeeper Mats Selz at Newcastle, Krul failed to earn any first team action at Ajax, before moving to fellow Dutch side Alkmaar, where he made 22 appearances.

However, it appears that Newcastle boss Rafael Benitez could allow the eight-cap Holland international to follow Sels out the door, after the Belgian joined Anderlecht on loan.

The Spanish manager also has Karl Darlow, Rob Elliot and England U20 stopper Freddie Woodman at his disposal, although he has been linked with a move for Napoli goalkeeper Pepe Reina this summer.
