Newcastle fans took to social media to praise the performance of young goalkeeper Freddie Woodman after his heroics helped England pick up victory in the U-20 World Cup final.

The 20-year-old Newcastle shot stopper put in a brilliant performance during the 1-0 win over Venezuela, which was topped off by an outstanding stop to deny a second half penalty from Watford’s young midfielder Adalberto Penaranda.

His clean sheet meant that Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s first half strike was enough to see Paul Simpson’s young lions crowned as champions in South Korea for the first time in their history.

Fans of the Magpies took to social media to praise Woodman, with many saying he deserves a chance in the first team set up.

Woodman is yet to make his senior debut for Newcastle, instead having spent time out on loan in order to gain first team experience.

His latest loan spell saw him in Scotland with Kilmarnock, where he made 14 appearances to help them on their way to an eighth placed finish.

The young goalkeeper has a lot of competition to break into the first team at St James’ Park, with Karl Darlow, Tim Krul, Matz Sels and Rob Elliot all fighting for a place between the sticks.

Woodman may face further competition this summer, with Rafa Benitez reportedly interested in securing a £4 million deal for Napoli goalkeeper Pepe Reina, as claimed by the Mirror.
