Sunderland are interested in signing Manchester United defender Guillermo Varela during the summer transfer window, according to a reliable journalist.

Guardian Sport’s deputy news editor Ed Aarons has claimed on his personal Twitter account that the Championship side are keen on bringing the 24-year-old to the Stadium of Light next season.

The full-back signed for the Manchester giants in 2013 but he has not been given the opportunity to perform in the first-team on a consistent basis.

The Uruguayan enjoyed his best spell in the first-team squad under former United manager Louis van Gaal during the 2015-16 season where he made a total of 11 appearances in all competitions.

Varela produced his only assist of the campaign in United’s 5-1 victory over FC Midtyjlland at Old Trafford in a Europa League tie.

New boss Jose Mourinho decided to send the defender out on a season long loan last season to Bundesliga side Frankfurt.

It turned out to be a tough campaign for the Uruguayan as he suffered an ankle injury which kept him out of the side for the majority of the season, and he only made 10 appearances in all competitions.

Varela’s current contract at Old Trafford runs out at the end of next season.
